How should you care for your wedding dress?

My personal perspective on choosing to preserve or display your wedding gown.

When I got married on November 20, 2021, I remember thinking that the wedding day had gone by far too quickly.

It was everything I had hoped it would be—a beautiful celebration surrounded by family and friends, followed by all of those little moments that make a wedding day feel like your own. And then, almost overnight, it was over.

My dress was one of the things I wasn't quite ready to put away.

I loved my gown, but more than that, I loved what it represented. It was the dress I wore when I married my husband and began this chapter of our life together.

So when the wedding was over, I found myself asking a question I think many brides eventually ask:

What am I actually supposed to do with my wedding dress now?

My sister had been married about ten years earlier and had chosen to store her gown away. Her dress had been professionally cleaned, carefully packaged, and placed in a box.

It was beautifully cared for.

But she hadn't seen it since.

That wasn't necessarily a problem. For many brides, preserving a gown and safely storing it away is exactly what they want. It protects something meaningful for the future—a daughter, an anniversary, or simply another chapter of life.

But I realized I wanted something different for my dress.

I wanted to protect it for the future without putting it away.

What to Do With Your Wedding Dress After the Wedding

Storing a gown away and choosing display and protection are really two different ways of caring for the same meaningful piece of your history.

Storage is designed to prepare a gown for the long term. The dress is professionally cleaned and packaged with the intention of keeping it protected until you're ready to see it again.

Displaying your gown allows you to protect it while continuing to see and enjoy it. It can still be a family heirloom. Your daughter could still wear it someday. The difference is that the dress remains visible and becomes part of your home along the way.

For me, that was the choice that felt right.

My husband and I could see my dress every day and remember our wedding together. For him, it is a reminder of seeing me walk down the aisle. For me, it is a reminder of the beginning of our marriage.

And over time, I realized the dress wasn't just part of our story anymore.

It had become part of our family's story.

Five Years Later

Nearly five years have passed since our wedding, and our family looks very different than it did that day. We have children now, and our little girl loves seeing Mommy's wedding dress.

Sometimes she'll ask about it, and suddenly we're talking about our wedding day all over again—how Daddy and I met, why we chose each other, and what marriage means to our family.

I love that those conversations happen because of a dress hanging in our home.

Maybe someday my daughter will want to wear it herself. Maybe she won't. Either way, it will still be there, carrying the story of where our family began.

That's something I didn't fully understand when I first decided to display my gown.

I thought I was deciding what to do with my wedding dress.

I was really deciding how I wanted it to live with us.

And I think that's the question every bride should ask herself.

If putting your gown away and bringing it out years from now feels right, storage may be the perfect choice.

If you want to continue seeing it, remembering it, and allowing it to become part of your home and your family's story, display and protection may be right for you.

There isn't one right answer.

There is only the answer that feels right for your story.

For me, I'm grateful I chose to let my dress live with us.

Because your wedding dress doesn't have to be the end of your wedding story.

It can be part of what comes next.
